Description
They called it a friendly. But for England and Argentina it's always competitive. Two footballing rivals with a point to prove just months away from the World Cup. Little wonder this match exploded into an all-time classic full of pride, passion and unbelievable tension.
Chances were created at each end in a game of high drama that twisted and turned relentlessly. Twice England fell behind and twice they clawed themselves level with Beckham, Lampard and Rooney in full flow. Then, as the drama built to fever pitch there was Michael Owen - Argentina's nemesis - to snatch a famous England win in the final few seconds and deliver the perfect World Cup boost. It was the final act of an end-to-end thriller that left Sven's England team victorious after a compelling 90 minutes of breathtaking action.
